This year we will be following the "Readers" and "Writers" Workshop model. These models "gradually release" the students to do more independent work and peer supported learning. This will also help students develop better study habits because they begin to develop a sense of ownership in regards to their own education.
As part of our global theme we will also be incorporating Project Based Learning. Students will learn by "doing". Projects give them the hands on experience and the opportunity to discover concepts they may otherwise overlook in a traditional setting.

What does a typical day look like for our students during their ELA Block?
Vocabulary lesson: Each week we will introduce new vocabulary words and work with them in different ways to e.nhance acquisition.
Grammar lesson: Each week we will introduce a new grammar concept and practice it to enhance writing.
Readers workshop OR Writers workshop: These workshops start with a mini lesson where a skill is taught. The students then work independently or in groups to practice the skill. Before the class is over, the student is quickly assessed to see if they understood the skill.
AR or Independent reading time: Students will have time to read independently and work in their readers notebook.
